Sir Keir Starmer and Joe Biden set for surprise war talks as fears over Ukraine escalation grow

SIR Keir Starmer and Joe Biden announced plans for surprise war talks yesterday amid more bloodshed in Ukraine and Israel.

The PM will fly to Washington to meet the US president on Friday to hold a “strategic discussion” as Ukrainian forces looked poised to push further into Russia.

The talks were announced as dramatic footage showed Volodymyr Zelensky’s military bomb two pontoon bridges. Russia had built the military crossings over the Seim River into the occupied Kursk region. The bridges were used in key supply routes.

But footage released yesterday showed two bridges collapse after they were bombed.

It follows other pontoon crossings being destroyed amid Ukraine’s Kursk offensive — which saw Zelensky’s forces take Russian Sudzha.

A Telegram channel from Russia said the bridge strikes were evidence that Ukraine is “not abandoning its plan to reach the Kursk-Rylsk highway”.

Analysts believe Ukrainian forces could make a dash to grab the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant.

Missiles supplied by North Korea were also blitzed by Ukraine in an attack on Soldatskoye, Russia.

The surprise war talks may address Ukraine’s pleas for long range missiles to push back Putin’s supply.

Announcing the meeting, the PM said: “I’m going because the situation in Ukraine is becoming ever-more pressing, as is the situation in the Middle East.”

About claims America was angry the UK suspended some arms export licenses to Israel, Sir Keir said: “We were talking to the US before and afterwards.

“They have a different legal system and they understand the decision that we have taken.”

It came as Israeli civilians were killed in a terrorist ambush yesterday.

Three men were shot on the Allenby Bridge between Jordan and Israel.

Rocket fire was also reported from Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza.
