Terry Godes said he saw a Facebook post calling for people to help search for the missing plane.

On Monday morning about a dozen pilots including Godes headed out to search the area.

Godes headed toward the lake, which sits at the foot of a glacier, and spotted what he thought was wreckage.

Godes said: “It kind of broke my heart to see that [the wreckage].

“But as I got closer down and lower, I could see that there was three people on top of the wing.”

“They were alive and responsive and moving around.”

The family had endured 12 hours in sub-zero temperatures on the wing of the partly submerged Piper aircraft, in icy Tustumena Lake in Alaska.

The trio were lifted to safety by a helicopter and taken to hospital but their condition was not serious.
