Sarangadi was foraging for shellfish in the river when the crocodile attacked him.

The beast reportedly launched out of the murky water and latched onto his torso with its jaws.

The man’s pals tried their beast to reach him but he was quickly dragged into the depths.

A devastated friend of Sarangadi said he had seen a “whirlpool” in the middle of the water shortly before the shocking attack.

Asdar said: “The other villagers waded into the river, and I chose to stay on land. Not long after we arrived, I saw a disturbance in the middle of the river.

“Suddenly, a crocodile surged out of the water and attacked Sarangadi.

“He works as a farmer. Collecting shellfish is not a usual part of his routine. He could have lived if we had not invited him.”

Rescue teams searched the river overnight where Sarangadi’s body was found.

The Kendari National Search and Rescue Agency confirmed the team had found the body floating near the mouth of the river – around a mile from the site of the attack.

Authorities have since warned villagers to stay away from the river for fear of another attack.

The Indonesian archipelago is home to 14 types of crocs – including a large population of extremely large and violent estuarine crocodiles.

Crocodiles have been driven further inland closer to villages due to overfishing, according to conservationists.
