A diver retrieved the body around 325ft from the shore as an ambulance rushed the man to the nearest hospital where he was later confirmed dead.

The local authorities said the man’s body is believed to have been in the water for several days before he was first found.

The man is thought to be aged between 40 to 45 years old.

An autopsy is taking place as the authorities at the nearby port of Rafina are starting to investigate the death.

Marathon is a popular holiday spot for thousands of tourists each year with large crowds typically gathering on Schinias beach.

It comes as Brit teenager, Anna Beaumont, was found dead on a family holiday in Florida after being found unresponsive in a theme park pool.

The 13-year-old from Cardiff drowned in Discovery Cove in Orlando.

Her death has been ruled an accidental drowning by authorities – but remains under investigation.
