Navy officer Leandro Araujo de Oliveira, 38, however narrowly escaped death when the bullet struck the survival guide stowed in his backpack.

The incredible close call was all captured on his helmet camera.

Leandro was riding his motorbike when two people on another bike ordered him to pull over at gunpoint in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.

Footage shows the pillion passenger aiming a handgun at him in the attack on the night of June 15.

The officer comes to a stop and tries to flee – only for multiple gunshots to ring out behind him.

Miraculously, one of the bullets ended up buried in Leandro’s naval survival guidebook – saving his life.

He then dodged death a second time, when a second bullet bounced off his physical therapy ball.

Military police officers arrived on the scene and began firing back, forcing the would-be-assassins to flee.

Leandro said: “The criminals approached me, fired shots, two hit me from behind and stopped at my book. Thanks to the military, they fled.”

“Firstly, I would like to thank God for the deliverance that was granted to me and then to Corporal Ferreira and Corporal Souza.

“Thanks to them, I was prevented from being attacked.”

Leandro’s father, retiree Jorge de Oliveira, said his son was heading to the family home after coming off duty.

He said: “He was on his way home when they tried to rob him. They fired two shots and by God’s grace, he was not injured.

“The shots went through his backpack and took out his book and an object that he uses to strengthen his fingers.

“It was deliverance, it was luck, thank God.

“When I found out what happened, I went up to the roof of my house and started crying and thanking God.”

In a statement to the media, the Civil Police said they were looking for the two assailants.

The statement said: “Agents are searching for images from security cameras in the region and other investigations are underway to determine who was responsible for the crime.”

Meanwhile in London, A Strictly Come Dancing star has shared the terrifying moment she was mugged in broad daylight in the middle of London.

Annabel Croft, who competed in the 2023 series alongside Johannes Radebe, said she was waiting for a taxi when the incident occurred.

Speaking on Instagram, Annabel detailed the moment and thanked those that rushed to her aid.

“I just wanted to warn people who are on their own in London. I just got mugged waiting for a taxi outside King’s Cross St Pancras,” she wrote.

“The man was riding a bike and wearing a black balaclava. He rode straight at me and took my phone clean out of my hands.”

Annabel is the latest person to suffer at the hands of cycle and moped thieves, who have been doing “snatch and grabs” around London for the past few years.
