Alex, 17, initially told officers that tattoo artist David, who used the alias Peter, died six months ago.
But he said: “He moved me to a property with mum.
I know he’s not passed away but I don’t know where he is because he was just moving around.”
On December 9, two days before Alex’s escape, the trio were at Chalabre’s Cafe des Sports.
Owner Valentin Petrini, 46, said: “The boy was here with his mother, who I know as Rose, and grandfather.
They come in from time to time. Rose charges her phone and uses the wi-fi. She likes a coffee.
“They seemed happy. Peter is a craftsman in wood. He said he was following the path of Jesus.”
The Sun understands Melanie, 43, fled the area when Alex’s story became public.
Alex added: “She had been talking with friends about going to see the Northern Lights in Finland.
“I don’t know if she’s gone there but she definitely planned to.”
