Mum & young son killed in avalanche on Lapland ski trip after temperatures plunged to -20C & their skis blew away

A MOTHER and her child have been killed in a devastating avalanche during a ski trip in Finland.

The pair was found dead buried in snow in the Pyhakuru Valley near Sweden on Thursday.

A mum and her son have died in an avalanche in Finland

The mum, who has not been named, was reportedly heading for a local hotel after spending a few days on a ski hike with her son, the regional Police reported.

Temperatures in the area fell shortly, going upto -20 degrees, accompanied with strong winds.

Cops said they began a rescue search operation on Tuesday after receiving an emergency alarm at around 2pm.

Lapland rescue services chief Harri Paldanius said the woman told emergency responders that wind had blown away their skis and ski poles – and that “it was really cold and getting dark.”

The woman reportedly stopped using her phone in order to save the battery.

However, cops said they could not reach her phone when they tried to call her, even though it was ringing.

Rescue operators said the weather conditions got so bad, they “don’t recall experiencing something like this before.”

Just a few days ago, a Brit mum and her son were killed in a devastating avalanche while skiing off-piste with an instructor in the French Alps.

The tragedy struck on December 28 at the St Gervais les Bains resort in Mont Blanc.

The avalanche swept through an off-piste area on the slopes of Mont Joly, at an altitude of 7,545 feet, the administration for the Haute-Savoie region said in a statement.

It involved a total of eight people – with five of them making a miraculous escape and one of them being injured.

Dozens of mountain rescuers set out to search for skiers trapped, finding a man and a woman dead under the snow.

A group of five Brits from the same family were caught up in the blast.

And just yesterday a Russian woman died after sustaining a genital injury caused by a jet ski driven by her husband.

Elena Spiryakova, 49, from Samara, was rushed to hospital but doctors were unable to save her.

Her husband Oleg, 52, now faces a criminal case into “causing death by negligence” after claims that he created a “water hammer” that hit his wife in between her legs, reported Russian news outlet Baza.
