The accident occurred on the Istanbul-bound lane of the highway, involving three buses and a truck.
Ten people died at the scene and the investigation into the exact cause of the collision is ongoing.
Some victims lost their lives after exiting their vehicles and getting hit by passing cars on the highway, reported Hurriyet Daily News.
59 people were injured, with eight of them in critical condition, shared Turkey’s minister of health, Fahrettin Koca, in a post on X (former Twitter).
He said: “May God have mercy on our citizens who lost their lives and we express our condolences to their relatives.
“Everything necessary is being done to ensure that the injured, whose treatment continues, regain their health.”
The injured victims were transported to nearby hospitals with 30 ambulances, he added.
The incident led to a temporary halt in transportation along the Istanbul-bound lane of the highway.
The emergency response teams have been dispatched to the scene in efforts to remove vehicles from the road.
The highway was reopened for controlled vehicle traffic after the completion of cleanup an hour later.
Governor Yasar Karadeniz said an investigation has been launched but the accident had likely occurred when a vehicle hit a truck in poor visibility due to a dense fog.
He expressed his condolences and called the loss of ten lives an unfortunate tragedy, reported Anadolu Agency.
Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç stated that six drivers involved in the accident were taken into custody, and the remaining injured driver will be detained after receiving medical treatment.
