Pictures show the mangled destroyed remains of the bus laying on its side moments after it flew off the road.

Emergency services and rescue teams can be seen searching through the wreckage for any lucky survivors and dragging them out to safety.

So far six confirmed people have been taken to a local hospital but are in a critical condition getting treatment.

The bus had 50 people on it when it crashed including young girls as the country mourns the awful deaths.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a message to the victims and their families before announcing financial compensation for anyone directly affected by the tragic crash.

He said: “The bus accident in Doda, Jammu and Kashmir is distressing.

“My condolences to the families who have lost their near and dear ones. I pray that the injured recover at the earliest.”

Modi went on to promise the families of anyone who died £2,000 and any injured almost £500.

A helicopter was sent to collect victims and either take them to hospital or return them to their loved ones.

The countries Federal Minister Jitendra Singh wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, that authorities were doing as much as they could to help anyone injured.

The passenger bus was on its way from Kishtwar to Jammu as it skidded off the road at Trungal in Doda district’s Assar area.

No reason has been given yet for why the bus crashed.

Local residents were some of the first people on the scene as a video shows them trying to drag motionless bodies of men and women off the street.

The locals reportedly knew many were dead before the emergency services arrived.

Roads in India are notoriously bad in mountain regions like the Himalayas, with more than 100,000 deaths each year.

Many cars and transports aren’t well enough equipped for the rough roads and dodgy conditions leading to a lot of unfortunate crashes.

Buses are commonly involved as drivers are known to ignore safety fears and squeeze on as many people as possible.

Last year, 11 people died and 25 were left badly injured after an overloaded minibus packed with schoolkids plunged into a gorge in northern India.

The minibus was reportedly crammed far beyond capacity when it veered off the road and hurtled down into a deep ravine with tragic consequences.

A wedding party was involved in a nightmare from hell as at least 25 people died after their bus plummeted 1600ft into a mountain gorge.

The large group were travelling back from Laldhang in the Haridwar district before the coach hurtled off the road in Pauri Garhwal.
