The severe weather wreaked havoc at Aeroparque Jorge Newbery airport in Buenos Aires on Sunday.

The strong wind gusts propelled the aircraft across the runway, forcing it to collide with a passenger staircase.

The Aerolineas Argentinas Boeing 737-700 turned to its side as its left wing struck and toppled the stairs used for boarding.

The 17-year-old plane sustained damage and its next scheduled flight to Las Heras on Sunday morning was cancelled while it was grounded for repairs.

Aerolinas Argentinas said in a statement: ” Due to the strong storm that mainly affected the operation of Aeroparque, 100 flights have been cancelled so far, and the same number have suffered delays and rescheduling.”

In a different video, a boarding staircase was seen carried and crushed at speed with the vehicles used by runway workers.

Significant damages affected air operations at Aeroparque Jorge Newbery, Ezeiza International Airport, and San Fernando International Airport.

The Aerolinas Argentinas confirmed that 16 of their planes were inoperable due to object impacts or lighting strikes.

The company said they might cancel or modify more flights throughout the day as a result of devastation caused by the deadly storm as well as intermittent closures of the airports.

The extreme weather resulted in deaths of at least 16 people over the weekend in Argentina and neighbouring Uruguay.

The deadly storm killed at least 13 people and injured several after a sports club roof collapsed in Bahia Blanca on Saturday evening.

One woman died early on Sunday after being struck by a falling tree branch in the town of Moreno.

In Uruguay, two people died as strong wind gusts swept in, reported the Daily Mail.

Devastation and destruction can be seen all across Buenos Aires as the storm caused power outage and downed trees.
